Alejandro Obando is building a school in Nicaragua for some of
the 6,000 children left orphaned and homeless by the long Civil
War. As a teacher in New York City, he’d found a good life for
himself, but he never forgot the desperate poverty of his childhood. Like many children, he sold fake watches and shoes in the
streets of his village in order to eke out a living. But Alejandro’s
grandmother had dreams of something better for him. “Be a good
citizen, get your education and help other people,” she would
say. This is the story about how Alejandro made his grandmother’s
dreams come true – by inviting his New York students like Daniel
and their families to join him in bringing hope – and a chance for
a new life – to the children of Nicaragua.
